Should experimenting with human life be stopped or regulated?
por Facundo Ibarlucía
Level 8 ICA student
Human beings have lived the evolution of species through history. They have always lived in a constant changing world in which they have had to use their minds to solve problems. They have discovered fire, created spears, arrows, ships, cars, planes and they have even created rockets that reached the space. Because of their special ability of reasoning, they have always been superior than all the other living species in the world that nowadays depend completely on them. As science has developed, a new controversial debate has come up and it is called "genetics". Some people say that genetic investigations must be stopped because it is dangerous to tinker with that kind of science, some others think that it should not be stopped because it would be a break for developing science, and the rest think that it should not be regulated. The only truth is that developing science should not be stopped in genetic investigation because it is part of human evolution. However, it must be regulated because it can be used against human life.

When people talk about genetic engineering and genetic therapy, they say that scientists have improved a lot since they began experimenting with animals and plants. For example, they have combined plant genes with animal genes and they have given origin to new species that did not exist in the world before. They say that if they continue with their experiments and investigations they will be able to create more nutritious food and to cure terminal diseases so life quality will improve a lot. The only problem is that investigations are very expensive and scientists need the support of the state and other companies. But as my grandfather used to say, "The purpose of scientific research is to improve life quality or to make it more comfortable, not to work for multimillionaire companies or private institutions".

Nevertheless, experiments can be dangerous for the rest of the world. First of all, because of the uncertainty that they have, because nobody before has experimented so they do not know how the investigations can conclude. It would also be very dangerous to leave scientists working alone in their labs without any kind of control because an experiment can end in an uncontrollable situation ,so that would be the first reason why it must be regulated. In addition to this problem, we can not discard that if investigations are successful, all the companies that have supported them will request for their "piece of cake" and will try to use it for their own benefits. Consequently, the state will have to pass new laws to control the consumption of new genetic food and the use of gene therapy. To make things worse, powerful people will be able to change human genes to create superior human species that will slowly displace the current human species.

To sum up, human beings must continue developing science because it is the basis of evolution, so gene investigations and experiments should not be stopped. Moreover, if the state continues investing on science, life quality will probably improve. However, it must be regulated because it is very risky, not only for human beings but for the rest of the world, because for example, some other species can suffer the changes that gene investigations and experiments can provoke.
